Expressive Arts
EXPRESSIVE ARTS
Expressive Arts encompasses the following subjects: Art and Design, Drama, Music and Dance
The programme aims to provide opportunities:
·
To develop, select and organise materials and media and develop knowledge of techniques, processes and skills in art and design.
·
To enjoy and appreciate their own art and that of others.
·
To communicate ideas and feeling through language expression and movement in real and imaginary drama contexts.
·
To take an active part in music making, to listen to and respond to music.
Some elements of Expressive Arts are addressed through cross-curricular topics.
Art & Design
The school has a wide range of resources for exploring the various media of painting, drawing and modelling. A well-established Drawing Programme provides the basis for line and pattern work. The school also boasts a range of books and posters illustrating the work of well-known artists allowing for experimenting in particular techniques such as Pointillism.
Music
We are fortunate to have a member of staff who has particular expertise in the teaching of music. Mrs Bouch teaches all classes a one hour music lesson fortnightly. A visiting teacher, Ms. Murphy works across a range of ages and stages developing voice and singing skills using the KOADLY methodology.
We use a range of resources, including digital lessons from Charanga, all of which are aligned to the outcomes and experiences in the Curriculum for Excellence.
The school has a range of instruments to encourage the exploration of practical music making. Some children in the upper primaries have weekly tuition from visiting string and brass teachers.
Drama
Lessons in drama are often related to interdisciplinary learning through topic studies and use is also made of audio and visual resources. All classes explore the use of movement, mime and language to express ideas and feelings. We often have dramatic and musical performances for our community in Garrowhill.
